Cancun 2020

Spring break in Cancun, what more could a girl ask for! The feeling of being back in Mexico is always one of the best feelings. One of my friends from college as well as two others decided to go to Cancun to pass our time for spring break. And let me just tell you that was one of the best decisions that we could have made. WHY? Because as soon as we came back to the states traveling was banned due to Covid. When we left for Mexico everything in the states was fine, everything was still open and there was still toilet paper in the stores LOL. The whole time we were on vacation not one word of Covid was mentioned in Mexico, so our vacation went as planned.

Apartment in Pok Ta Pok

This time in Cancun was very different than the first time I was there. For starters we didn’t have an airport transfer scheduled for us to get to the place we were staying and to take a taxi it cost around $75 USD, which is LOCA, because we were literally only going like 20 minutes away, but hey what can you do expect pay the man! The major difference for me this trip was that fact we did not stay at an All Inclusive Resort we stayed in an AirBnb for the first night and then for the remainder of the trip we stayed in what I would consider an apartment. A very nice apartment, I might add, one was more elegant than where I live in the states. The AirBnb was really small, but it came with two beds, hot water and a pool, so there was not much complaining there! On the other hand the apartment was huge in comparison, that came with two bedrooms, a full kitchen and living room and two full bathrooms! Us girls got the bedroom with the bathroom in our room, which we had to fight the guys for .. but I mean come on, we are girls, we needed it! Looking out the window we could see the lagoon side of Cancun and just beyond that, the infamous hotel zone.

For my fellow travelers it was their first time in Cancun, I was just happy to be back. My first time in Cancun my friend and I did not do any excursions, we didn’t even leave the hotel. This time we were out and about every single day, we were always doing something. From climbing Cobra, swimming in the Cenotes to taking the ferry to Isla Mujeres and exploring the island by driving around in a golf cart. To be able to rent to golf cart in Isla you have the give them your drivers license to hold on to until you come back, we paid for an hour BUT we were late coming back, of course … the only way to get the license back was by paying the extra pesos! I mean we were like a few minutes late, but they didn’t care. Pesos or no license .. your choice! Hold on .. there’s more! Our adventures didn’t cease there, we also took day trips to Chichen Itza, Tulm, Playa del Carmen, Valladolid and Hubiku. Can I just point out Playa had the best burritos I’ve ever had!

Now lets make note that by no means am I a person that parties, but everyone I was with was the complete opposite! If you have been to Cancun you know the bars don’t close until about 4AM, it’s like the party NEVER STOPS! And the tequila that they shove down your throat, well that’s a whole different story. Everyone there wants you to have a good time so everywhere you look someone is offering you a shot of tequila, I mean it is the official drink of Mexico, right?! Take the shot, your on vacation, make the best of it! Most of the bars, if not all of them within the Hotel Zone, are all on the same street so it is very convenient and it makes bar hopping that much easier. If you stay out until 4AM you’ll see some pretty crazy things happening in Mexico, trust me! When you are finally ready to go back to your place and recharge for the next day … just like in New York, find a taxi that is unoccupied, stick your hand out and hope that the driver stops for you! There is Uber in Cancun, but as we were told, Uber drivers and taxi drivers are in competition with each other. It goes as far as Uber drivers getting their windows smashed, so to be safe … just take a taxi!

If you have not been to Cancun and you ever get the chance to go … GOOO! So many people say that it very touristic and yes that can be very true, but there is also a lot of culture there, you just have to find it. Take a trip outside of the Hotel Zone and head into the real Cancun. Where you are going to find some of the best food with the cheapest prices.
